     I. Lead-in Part: 1. Brainstorming: Ask students to think of entertainments. Entertainment is as important as your study. There is a saying which goes like this, -- All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. So we should learn to entertain ourselves, that is to make ourselves relaxed and happy.      3. T: I did have a favourite TV programme. it is called “Happy Dictionary”. T: Do you know what type of this programme? Yes, It is a quiz show / programme. ppt

      This TV quiz programme is an entertainment which designed to test the knowledge, luck, or skill of people. In this program a wide range of prizes are given to the winners. The host of this program is my favourite. She is a famous hostess. Her name is “Wang Xiao Ya”. ppt

      She is an incredible host.

      T: Now, please look at the picture.

      Q: 1. Where are they ?

     (They are in the studio.)

     A studio is a place where television programmes are filmed.

     2. What are they doing?

     (They are attending the filming of a TV quiz programme.)

     3. Who is he? (He is a contestant) T: What do you think the contestant felt? Is he confident or nervous? T: When you say sb. is nervous. We can use another word “tense”.

     “tense”

     means very nervous. When people feel nervous, they would behave strangely.

     Sometimes they even faint. “Faint” means lose sense. If you faint, you can not see, you can not feel, you lose all your senses. 4. Who are they? (a cameraman and some audience)

     Have you found the director? What does a director do?

     A director is the person who is in charge of making a film /TV programme. ppt

      A contestant is the person who takes part in a contest. A host is the person who introduces and talks to guests on a television or radio show. An announcer is the person who declare the appearance of the guest or a host.

     A cameraman is the person who operates a camera to film a TV programme.

     T: Today, we’ll learn a new text “Surprises at the studio” ppt (A surprise refers to an unexpected event. This surprise we are going to learn about is what happened in the studio.)

     II. Skimming & Scanning: Who is in the story?

     Mandy & Angela • People working in the studio: director, cameraman, make-up artist, announcer, host

     • Others in the studio: contestants, audience

     III. While-reading activities: (A) Setting (Read the passage by asking them questions about the setting of the

      story)

      Setting is a set of surroundings; the place at which sth. happens.

      Q: 1) Where are Angela and Mandy probably sitting at the beginning of the story?

     (They are probably sitting in the audience.)

     2) Where are the contestants sitting?

     (They are sitting at their desks on the stage.)

     3) What is it like on the stage?

     (It feels very hot because there are many lights.)

     4) Where is the control room?

     (It is above and opposite the stage.)

     5) Where does the host stand?

     (He stands on the stage in front of the desks.)

     (B) Chronological Order

      ppt T: When we read a story, what do we expect to find out? We expect to find out the chronological order. which event happens first, and then, and what is the ending. This way of organizing the supporting details of a passage is called chronological order.

     1. Here are seven themes in the story. Please study each sentence carefully, and then arrange them according to the chronological order. That means which theme occurs first and which goes next.

     (Put the events of the story in the correct order by writing 1 to 6)

     ppt ( 2 ) One of the contestants fell forward across the desk and fainted. ( 5 ) Mandy was too exited to keep still. ( 3 ) Angela was chosen to be one of the contestants. ( 1 ) Mandy and Angela sat among the audience, waiting for the quiz show to be filmed. ( 6 ) Angela won the prize , which is a trip for two to the lovely city of Paris. ( 4 ) Lester Li came running in and started the programme. (2 5 3 1 6 4) (Ask a student to read the sentences according to the right time order.)

     T: Chronological order is quite often used when describing historical events, telling a story, explaining a process, or informing sb. of sth . T: Time expressions, such as in the 1970s, then, one year later, are often used in writing a story.) 2. Now, let’s try to find some time expressions in this story.

      (C) The General Idea of the text. T: So, you can get a general idea of what the story is about. (The passage is a story about how Angela from the audience took part in a television quiz programme and won the first prize.) T: Can you use one word to describe Angela’s performance? (excellent, successful, perfect, confident. And we can say she is terrific or terribly good. “terribly good” means too good to be true.)

      (D) T: Now, Let"s look at the text. I will give you two minutes to look through the

     story and try to find as many surprises as you can. ppt Now let’s share what you have found. (who likes to make a start?) What did you find? a. One of the contestants fainted just before the recording began. b. Angela was chosen to be the contestant. c. Angela won a grand prize, which is a trip for two to the lovely city of Paris.

     (E) T: When reading, we have to be more careful, we have to be pay attention to details. Now, I’m going to ask you some questions, focusing on the details. 1. What are the possible reasons for one of the contestants to faint?

     (Because it was too hot; the contestant was very tense) 2. Why did the director choose Angela ( instead of Mandy or sb. else)?

     (Because Angela put her hand) 3. How do we know Angela was very terrific? (Because she answered question easily, she was soon ahead of the other two contestants.) 4. Mandy’s body language showed that she was feeling very worried during the quiz show. What action showed this? What action showed Mandy was worried? (There are two actions: She sat on the edge of her seat; She chewed her fingernails while she watched.)

     (F) T: You’ve done a terrific job. In reading, remember always to keep track of the pronouns, and to understand what they stand for in the passage. Here I’ve got three phrases taken from the passage. Please tell what these pronouns refer to in the passage.

     What do these pronouns refer to?

     T: If you were Angela on the scene, would you volunteer to be one of the contestants? Why?

     T: Why not try! Even you are not sure if you will be successful, still you can make try. If you give up trying, success will never belong to you. Don’t you think so? And also, on the other hand, in your study, we should know that if you want to be successful, it is not wise to only try your luck instead of making great efforts. Do you agree?

      T: Would you like to take part in the recording of a TV program? If you were at the studio, would you like to be the contestant or to be the audience? Why?

     IV. Homework
