     阅读理解 (共 15 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 30 分;)

     阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出最佳答案。

A A quarrel at home may result in you falling ill. Don’t laugh, it’s true. Family matters including living habits and even the way we speak have a big effect on our health, doctors say. Wang Xiaoyu, a Senior 2 girl from Xichang, Sichuan Province, fainted(晕倒)

in class when she heard her classmates quarrel at the top of their voices. Quarrels between her parents also put the girl into a coma. It is because she is suffering from depression, caused by bad relations at home, doctors explained. “We don’t get sick or stay well by ourselves,” says Dr Robert Ferrer from the US. Ferrer shows that family forces may explain up to a quarter of health problems, in his

recent research. The genes you get from your family may cause illness. If one of your parents has a heart attack, your risk of being affected may double. But effects on health are not only written in our DNA. Unrelated people who live under the same roof also get similar problems. Diet, lifestyle and environment affect our health, too. Ferrer’s research also found that if teenagers feel they are ignored or unimportant at home they are more likely to get sick. We may never fully understand all the effects that families have on our health. But just as individual

problems can have effects on others, a small improvement can have big benefits, Ferrer said. 56.Which of the following can best explain why Wang Xiaoyu fainted in class? A. Because her classmates often quarreled in class. B. Because her parents used to quarrel. C. Because of her depression caused by bad family relations. D. Because her classmates shouted loudly at her. 57.According to Dr Ferrer, which of the following statements is TRUE? A. We get sick or stay well by ourselves. B. Only the genes we get from our family have a big effect on our health. C. Our health has nothing to do with diet, lifestyle and environment. D. Teenagers who are ignored at home get sick more easily than those who are not. 58.The underlined word “coma” in Paragraph2 probably means ________. A. embarrassment

     B. faint

     C. tiredness

     D. sadness

      59. The best title for this passage is ________. A.

     Family relations.

      B. The reasons why we get sick. C.

     Happy family makes you healthy.

     D. A research about teenagers’ health.

Good readers know that reading isn’t just about knowing words — it’s a way of

thinking. Smart readers think before, during and after reading. Here are some tips that

     may be of some help.

Think before you read. Before you read the text, ask yourself the questions why you are reading it and what you want to get from it. Answering the questions will help you choose what words you need to know and what words you can skip or scan.

Think while you are reading. Can you get the meaning of the text without looking up new words in a dictionary? Are there any clues in the text? A text will often give examples that may help you understand what some of the words mean. Let’s take the following sentence for example:

Many large Russian cities, such as Chelyabinsk and Irkutsk, have taken steps to protect their culture .The words “Chelyabinsk” and “Irkutsk” may be new to us, but the sentence tells us that they are examples of _______.

Think after you read. Do you understand the text? What is the main idea of the text? Can you guess the meaning of the new words? Which words do you need to look up? Is the text too easy or too hard for you?

If you practice reading and thinking in this way, you will become a smarter reader and you will learn more, faster and better. 60. This passage is probably taken from _______. A. a newspaper for general readers

      B. a magazine for language teachers C. a book for language learners

     B. we’d better look up every new word in a dictionary C. we should learn to guess the meanings of new words D. the clues in a passage should be made use of C Rescuers have found the bodies of over 130 people killed in two ferry

disasters in Bangladesh. The accidents happened during a storm that hit the

country on April 21st.Hundreds more are missing or feared to be dead.

The two ferries sank in different rivers near the capital city of Dhakfi as strong winds and rain hit the South Asian country. The government has since banned all ferries and other boats from traveling at night during the April-May stormy season. One of the ferries,MV Mitali, was carrying far more people than it was supposed to.About 400 passengers fitted into a space made for just 300,police said. The second ferry carried about 100 passengers.

“The number of deaths is certain to rise.”said an official in charge of the rescue work.“No one really knows how many people were on board the ferry or how many of them survived.” Ferries in Bangladesh don’t always keep

passenger lists, making it difficult to determine the exact number of people on board. Besides the ferry accidents,at least 40 people were killed and 400

injured by lightning strikes.falling houses and trees and the sinking of

     small

boats. Storms are common this time of year in Bangladesh,as are boating

accidents.Ferry disasters take away hundreds of lives every year in a nation

of 130 million people. Officials blame these river accidents on a lack of

safety measures, too many passengers in boats and not enough checks on weather conditions. Ferries are a common means of transport in Bangladesh. It is a country covered by about 230 rivers. Some 20,000 ferries use the nation’s

Waterways every year. And many of them are dangerously overcrowded.Since 1977, more than 3,000 people have died in some 260 boating accidents.

     63.The two ferry disasters occurred_______.

     A. at noon B. in the morning C. at night. D. In the afternoon.

64.________ passengers was MV Mitali designed to carry?

     A.500 B.100 C.400 D.300

65.Officials attribute boating accident to ________

     A. strong winds.B. bad weather conditions.

     C. the blockages of waterways. D. the lack of safety measures.

66.Which of the following statements is NOT true of the two ferry disasters?

     A. They happened during a storm. B. They sank on April 21.

     C. The exact number of deaths could be easily determined.

     D. They sank somewhere near Dhaka. D

Who are these people rushing by you on the street? More than 215 million people now call America “home”, but most of them can trace their families back to other parts of the world. If you look at the names on shop windows, you will see that Americans come from many different lands. The idea that these people, who once were strangers to the United States, have lost the customs and cultures of their original( 原 始 的 ) countries and have become “American” is really not true. In fact, what exists in America is more often a kind of ‘side-by-side’ living in which groups of people from other countries often have kept many of their own customs and habits. They join the general American society only in certain areas of their lives---such as schools, businesses, and sports----but they keep many of their native customs and manners socially

and at home. This living ‘ side-by-side ’ has both advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes it may cause disagreements to develop between groups whose ways of life are very different from one another. However, there are also great advantages that come from the variety of cultures brought by settlers from other lands. There is great freedom of choice among ideas, dress, food, and social customs in America. Everyone can find some part of his or her own familiar world in the United States, in churches, music, food, national groups or newspapers 67.More than 215 million people call America “ home” because _______.

     A. they have their houses there.

      B. they settle there now.

     C. they want to make their home there.

      D. they like that land very much. 68. According to the passage, people in the USA________.

     A. share American customs and culture

     B. live in a kind of side-by-side society

     C. keep their own customs and habits firmly D. make no choice to accept American customs

     69. Which of the following statements is true?

     A. They always stick to their own customs and habits.

     B. Side-by-side living style is not suitable.

     C. They face the society they are not familiar with.

     D. The advantages coming from the variety of cultures make life in America colorful. 70. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

     A. Advantages and Disadvantages.

      B. Different Customs and Habits.

     Save the rainforest

As we all know, rainforest plays an important role in the whole environment. It provides oxygen for human beings and homes for wild animals. However, in recent years, large areas of rainforest are disappearing day by day. As a result, more and more wild animals are endangered or even dying out.

As a middle school student, I am really concerned about the situation. The government should make laws to protect rainforest as soon as possible. And we students should take action too, for example, we can help to call people’s attention to the importance of the rainforest in environmental protection.
